Volcanoes, pyramids and striking historical architecture

Just an hour and a half drive south-east of Mexico City is Puebla. The country’s fourth largest city, it lies in a valley ringed by impressive, snow-capped mountains and volcanoes. Puebla’s architecture is just as impressive as its surroundings. Once one of the most important cities strategically to the conquistadors, it is steeped in history and features some striking buildings (its historic old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Things to do in Puebla include exploring its marvellous architecture. A walking tour through the city centre will take you through the highlights, including the ornate cathedral which dates back to 1575, and the Biblioteca Palafoxiana – the oldest library in the Americas. The Amparo Museum showcases one of Mexico’s most important collections of pre-Hispanic, colonial and modern art, while the Callejón de los Sapos, a quaint street lined with colourful houses, is home to a weekend antique and craft market.

The city has fashioned itself into a distinct cultural corner of Mexico and Puebla cultural experiences are diverse and plentiful. It’s the birthplace of the original Cinco de Mayo celebrations, as well as mole poblano, a thick, spicy sauce, and one of the must-taste delicacies on Puebla culinary tours. The beautiful Talavera tiles are produced here, and the city is home to a strong arts and literary scene thanks to its universities, not to mention the awesome remains of the Tepanapa pyramid in the adjacent town of Cholula.

When to visit

Mexico has both a wet and a dry season. The dry season runs from November to April, and brings cooler, less humid weather, meanwhile the wet season, running from June to October, sees daily and often heavy rain showers.  From September to mid-October, hurricane season occurs along the coastal regions, and we advise against travelling during this time.
