Explore Germany’s enthralling castles, cities and countryside

Germany’s major cities are full of history and architecture with plenty for you to enjoy along the way. Learn about the country’s past in Berlin or spend time in Dresden, widely known as the ‘Florence on the Elbe’. Expect Baroque and Rococo palaces, opera houses, world-class art collections and a beautiful setting along the River Elbe.

Set out on a private food tour through Berlin, where you can taste sweet and savoury German dishes with local craft beer or a glass of wine. In wine-growing areas like the Rhine and Mosel valleys, seasonal festivals celebrate culinary and wine tradition, especially during the grape harvest in September and October.

Frankfurt sits on the banks of the River Main with historic sites, museums and a modern skyline. You can take a river cruise of around three hours to Mainz in Rhine Valley and explore its old town on foot. Then head to Rüdesheim, known for its vineyard-covered hillsides and Drosselgasse, a narrow cobbled alleyway with traditional wine taverns, restaurants and live music.

In Bavaria, the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a lovely choice for family-friendly hikes around clear lakes, mountain trails and views of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak. Visit Bavaria’s fairytale castles on a luxury tour, taking in royal history and some of Europe’s most beautiful alpine landscapes. You can stay in our handpicked accommodation in Munich, Bavaria’s capital, or in the surrounding countryside.

Contact our team of Europe specialists to start planning your own luxury trip to Germany. They’ll curate adventures that take in the unmissable landmarks while adding their first-hand insights and recommendations for lesser-known experiences.

Highlights

Join a private food tour in Berlin, sampling sweet and savoury German cuisine paired with craft beer or wine

I love how quickly the experience changes when travelling through Germany. One day you can be exploring Berlin’s history and food, and the next you’re walking through vineyards, castles or alpine villages. It feels completely different.

When to visit

Germany is a great destination to visit year-round. Explore its cities in May, September and early October when temperatures often sit around 15-20°C (59-68°F). We especially recommend a Christmas market tour in winter, usually from late November to December. These festive traditions are full of lights, handmade crafts, mulled wine and traditional sweet treats.

For exploring the natural landscapes of Bavaria or the Rhine Valley, conditions are excellent between April and October. Expect mild weather and long days.
