A South Pacific family vacation of beaches, reefs and island adventures

If there’s one thing that makes the whole family smile on holiday, it’s a beautiful beach. And in the South Pacific, you really are spoilt for choice.

In Fiji and French Polynesia, the underwater world is full of vibrant coral, reef fish, lagoons and calm swimming spots. There’s plenty for everyone to explore, from experienced divers and keen swimmers to little ones taking their first few splashes. There is also a wealth of culture to discover. In Fiji, traditional village visits and lovo feasts offer a glimpse into local island life.

When it comes to hotels, there are some wonderful island resorts that work especially well for families. You have beautiful scenery on your doorstep, and many resorts offer special programmes and facilities just for children. Some also provide babysitting services. Parents can enjoy some time out while younger travellers are playing in the sand, whizzing down slides or splashing in the pool.

There tends to be much less moving around in the South Pacific compared to other parts of the world, which means less time spent in the car. Many transfers from the mainland to the islands are by boat or seaplane, turning the journey itself into a mini adventure.

Highlights

Cruise through Fiji’s Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands with time for swimming, snorkelling, glass-bottomed boat trips and beach stops

Visit a Fijian village to learn about local traditions, then try lovo, a traditional feast cooked in an earth oven

Sail Bora Bora’s lagoon by private catamaran, stopping for swims with views of Mount Otemanu

Stay at family-friendly resorts in Fiji, where children can take part in island activities and learn from a resident marine biologist

Snorkel Moorea Lagoon with a naturalist guide, looking out for stingrays, black-tip reef sharks, turtles and dolphins

The South Pacific is one of those places families can enjoy year-round. I especially like that even in the wetter season, you still have warm water, beach days and time outdoors. Tropical showers often pass through quickly, leaving the islands feeling even greener.

When to visit the South Pacific for a family trip

The South Pacific is warm year-round. In Fiji, May to October brings lower humidity, pleasant temperatures of around 19–29°C and clearer water for snorkelling and diving.

French Polynesia is generally cooler and drier from March to November with temperatures still sitting around 25–30°C. Travel from July to November to spot humpback whales.
