Discover a must-visit charming town on Brazil’s Costa Verde

Set on Brazil’s emerald green Costa Verde, Paraty is a beautifully preserved Portuguese colonial town, flanked by lushly forested mountains on one side and jewel-toned ocean on the other. Luxury Paraty tours present an abundance of things to do, such as exploring the historical town centre, visiting cachaça distilleries or enjoying the beautiful beaches.

Quaintly charming from every angle, the whitewashed buildings and quiet cobbled streets of the pedestrianised town centre have been awarded UNESCO world heritage status due to their beauty and historical importance. Stay at one of the town’s boutique hotels, known as pousadas to truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere.

While it may appear laidback, almost sleepy in demeanour, Paraty comes alive with culture. It’s home to a plethora of delicious restaurants and chilled out bars that float live music across the sun-warmed streets.

Once a year, it plays host to an International Literary Festival and the Paraty Bourbon Jazz Festival which attract creatives from around the world. Being by the sea, seafood is an obvious speciality here – try moqueca, a seafood stew made with coconut milk, washed down with locally distilled cachaça. Paraty is one of the most important regions in Brazil for cachaça production, and a distillery tour during your stay is a must.

The town itself sits in the corner of an enormous bay area whose calm waters are home to hundreds of islands, many with their own unspoilt beaches and seafood restaurants. Boats can easily be chartered and exploring these areas is a real joy – the nearby fishing village of Trindade is home to some of the best beaches in Brazil, set against a dramatic backdrop of thickly rainforested mountains.

Highlights

Learn how the Brazilian national spirit of cachaça is made and enjoy a tasting on a tour of one of the many local distilleries

Relax on the mesmerising beaches in the nearby fishing village of Trindade

Charter a boat and set out on the emerald-hued waters for day of exploration and island hopping

The Gold Rush town of Paraty evokes memories of a bygone era with its historic buildings, horse-drawn carts and cobbled streets. Surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, it’s the perfect spot to switch off and unwind and enjoy the riches of Brazil.

When to visit

The best time to visit Paraty is during the dry season, from April to June, when you can expect pleasant weather with fewer visitors than during the summer months, creating perfect conditions for exploring the rainforest trails and untamed islands around Paraty.

Winter falls from June to August, and brings slightly cooler, though still lovely weather. The best time to visit Brazil for warm weather is during summer, from December to March. Average daily temperatures range from 24°C–35°C (75°F–95°F). This also coincides with the rainy season, and short rain showers during the afternoon or evening are common, although they won’t spoil the rest of the weather.
