Old world elegance and panoramic views on luxury England and Scotland train tours

Wind through misty mountains and rolling countryside aboard England and Scotland’s luxury trains, where intricately restored carriages and five-star service celebrate the golden age of travel.

Our expert travel designers can arrange a rail trip personalised just for you. Enjoy a short jaunt aboard the Jacobite steam train that inspired the Hogwarts Express, a multi-day luxury rail journey in the Scottish Highlands, or an opulent day trip to historic cities and grand country houses – and we will seamlessly weave it into a wider British or European itinerary.

England and Scotland’s heritage railways celebrate the act of travelling itself. You’ll travel through stunning landscapes and disembark in the most picturesque of destinations, from the Scottish Lowlands and the Scottish Highlands, to Bath, Oxford and Edinburgh. To get to the rugged West Coast and Islands you can ride the West Highland Line across remote Rannoch Moor and take the seasonal Jacobite steam train across Glenfinnan Viaduct.

England and Scotland train tours champion the in-between. The journey is the destination, and watching the world slowly pass by is profoundly satisfying. Plus of course, when you’re on a Belmond train in Scotland or England, regionally inspired produce – including excellent local wines – is on the menu in the vintage dining cars.

I love the heritage that comes with luxury British trains. The rescued and restored carriages that make up today's British Pullman were built between 1920 and 1952, and each one has its own name and history – some have even carried royalty and heads of state. It's a real privilege experiencing the glamour of old world rail travel.

Where to go

Scottish Highlands thumbnail

Scottish Highlands

In the Scottish Highlands, glaciar carved mountain ranges dominate the landscape, their peaks often shrouded in mist or crowned with snow even in summer months. Glens (valleys) cut through the terrain and lochs reflect the changing sky.

England

England's landscape unfolds as a patchwork of gentle contrasts. Rolling hills and dales, honey-coloured Cotswold villages, northern lakes and rugged mountains and an ever-changing coastline. Discover the dreaming spires of Oxford, the Georgian crescents of Bath and London centuries-old landmarks alongside modern architecture.

West Coast and Islands

The West Highland Line – probably Britain’s most scenic train route – is a remarkable introduction to Scotland’s West Coast landscape. The railway carves its way through seemingly impassable terrain, skirting rivers and glens, and hugging the undulating coastline, before crossing high moorland and the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

When to travel

England and Scotland are year-round destinations, but the spring months between March to May and autumn months of September to November are particularly pleasant. In the Scottish Highlands, weather transforms this landscape hourly. Sunshine illuminates the terrain with extraordinary clarity one moment, while rain sweeps across in sheets the next. Some luxury trains are seasonal and only run from April to October.
