When conjuring images of Europe’s coast, Norway may not immediately spring to mind, yet this Scandinavian nation is home to the longest coastline on the continent. And arguably, it’s also some of the most beautiful. Glaciers have carved a route through the mountainside over the course of millennia, creating a topography of deep and dramatic valleys, sheer cliffs and waterfalls, and calm, clear water that echoes the hues of the sky.

On a luxury Norway tour with Jacada, you can experience these soul-stirring landscapes from both land and water with a bespoke itinerary designed just for you. Feel the caress of the ocean breeze as you sail across the ‘king of fjords’, Sognefjord, or cut through the glass-clear surface of Hjørundfjord on a private guided kayaking excursion. Engage with the beauty of the landscapes on a guided glacier walk at Tunsbergdalsbreen, the longest glacier arm in Norway, or e-bike and hike past epic vistas on lush valley trails.

There are thousands of fjords to explore. Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are some of the big names, but even the smallest of inlets can take your breath away. Your Jacada travel expert can round out your experience with a taste of local culture. Wild swimming is a popular pastime in Norway, and an invigorating floating sauna and fjord cold water swim is one of our favourite experiences to recommend. Warm up with a locally hosted cooking class where you’ll learn to make the traditional Norwegian crispbread lefse.

As well as the fjords themselves, the coastal cities of Bergen and Alesund are both great places to base yourself, or to explore in their own right. With its romantic and elegant design, Alesund’s architecture evokes a fairytale village on the water’s edge, while Bergen is known as ‘the city of the seven mountains and seven fjords’. Get in touch with our team of Europe experts to start planning your trip to the Norwegian Fjords.

When to visit Norway

While beautiful all year round, Norway’s weather can be unpredictable and exceptionally cold during the winter (December to February). For cruising, kayaking, biking and hiking around the fjords, we recommend travelling between May and early October, when the weather is generally more pleasant and the days are longer. During July for example, average daily temperatures can reach around 18–21°C (64–70°F).

Always pack some warm layers and waterproof clothing to prepare for inclement weather.
