Explore Piedmont's food, wine and mountain scenery

Nestled in the north west of the country, Piedmont is one of Italy‘s most naturally beautiful regions. Its name means ‘at the foot of the mountains’ and the area stands out for its proximity to the majestic French and Swiss Alps, its landscapes a patchwork of snow capped peaks, sweeping valleys and plains dotted with vineyards and pretty baroque towns.

Luxury travel in Piedmont is characterised by castle stays and boutique hotels, which punctuate the picturesque countryside. It is also a region famous for its food and drink with rich culinary traditions that differentiate it from the rest of Italy, including truffles, hazelnuts, and enough chocolate shops and wineries to ensure a perfectly indulgent visit.

The country’s longest river, the Po, originates high in the mountains, giving life to Italy’s most fertile plain. Rice fields dot the landscape while further up you’ll find the two national parks of Gran Paradiso and Val Grande National Parks, as well as internationally-renowned ski resorts. Hidden in the surrounding hills are seven of the nine Sacri Monti, groups of chapels from the 16th and 17th centuries that are dotted around Piedmont and Lombardy.

Turin is Piedmont’s most elegant city, characterised by tree-lined boulevards, lively piazzas and pretty baroque architecture. It briefly served as Italy‘s first capital and gained significance after donating its monarchy to the newly unified Italian nation in 1861. Observe this regal past by heading out to the magnificent Palace of Venaria and the Stupinigi Hunting Lodge. In the city itself, the best way to spend your time is to wander along the wide avenues, dip in and out of the beautiful belle epoch cafes, and explore its world-class museums.

Further south is the town of Alba, a maze of cobbled streets and red brick towers and famous for its truffles and hazelnuts. It is also the gateway to Piedmont’s famous wine regions, known for their boisterous reds such as Barbaresco and Borolo, which has earned itself the title ‘king of wines and the wine of kings’.

Highlights

Set out into the forest to hunt for Piedmont’s coveted delicacy: the truffle, on a privately guided truffle hunt

Savour the region’s finest red wines on a private vineyard tour and tasting

Soak up breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, which fringe Piedmont’s verdant landscapes

Immerse yourself in the region’s history by visiting its world-class museums and discovering its regal past at the magnificent Palace de Venaria

Piedmont offers yet another perspective to Italy’s kaleidoscope of cultural landscapes – here you’ll find a region distinct yet confident in its identity, complete with impressive architecture, culinary delights, and glorious Alpine and vineyard views.

When to visit

Each month in Italy offers a different experience depending on which region you visit. We recommend visiting during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) to enjoy pleasant, mild weather conditions outside of the peak summer season, which can also bring intense heat.

For wine tours and tastings, September and October are the best months to go as they coincide with the grape harvest, and you’ll also witness Italy’s abundant countryside bathed in the gold and orange hues of autumn. Truffle hunting is also best done in autumn, with the truffle season in Piedmont ocurring from late September to December.
