Pre-montane forests

Explore a diverse mix of landscapes

A primate sanctuary

Forming the northern end of a forest corridor that runs south to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Edward in Uganda, Kibale encompasses a diverse mix of landscapes, including vast swathes of evergreen and the last significant expanse of pre-montane forest in East Africa.

The park is best known as the home of habituated chimpanzees troops, and trekking to see these groups is the main draw to the park. There are 12 other primate species found here, including the rare L’Hoest’s monkey and red colobus monkeys, making for one of the highest diversities and concentrations of primates in Africa.

Elephant, leopard, buffalo, red and blue duikers, sitatunga, giant forest hogs and over 375 bird species are also resident. And you may catch some of them on forest hikes through the park on your luxury Kibale Forest safari. Many of the lodges are also within a couple of hours of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south.

When to visit Kibale Forest National Park

When visiting Kibale Forest, the dry seasons of June to August and December to February offer the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking. During these months, the forest floor is easier to navigate and the thinned emerald canopy provides good visibility for observing the creatures in their natural habitat. While the “green seasons” from March to May and October to November introduce a more adventurous terrain with slippery trails, they reward the you with world-class birdwatching that truly brings the forest to life.
