The Sunrise Camp

An off-shoot of Chem Chem Lodge, Little Chem Chem is an intimate camp on the eastern side of the private reserve that embraces the elegance and simplicity of a more traditional safari.

Six tents are far from basic, with en-suite shower rooms housing hot-water bucket showers and flushing toilets, a study desk, rocking chair and a dressing room. Outside, find a private fire pit whose crackles twinned with the sound of the African wilderness at night evoke a prehistoric notion of place.

Meals are served in the mess tent, although private dining is available too, where guests can dine by their campfire. For lunch, you can disappear for a private picnic lunch in the African bush.

Of course, game drives and walking safaris are the order of the day here at Little Chem Chem, and there’s also the option to embark on a sunrise drive or night safari – a perk of staying on a private reserve. Around the camp, you’ll find elephants, lions and cheetahs, with wildebeest and zebra calving during the wet season (December to March). For adventurous guests, there are hot air balloon rides available, too.

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is the only permanent luxury lodge in this game-rich national park. Cradled in the boughs of huge mahogany trees, its ten stilted timber and makuti palm fronds treehouse suites blend intimacy and romance in cool, leafy surrounds.

The elegant bedrooms are fitted with contemporary furnishing in neutral colours and textures, overhead fans and billowing mosquito nets. Each treehouse suite features decks suspended above the forest floor and large windows invite the lush forest inside, best enjoyed from the free standing bath or from under the steaming hot water of an outdoor shower.

Being the only permanent lodge set in the remote southern region of the reserve, far from the park’s entrance gate, game drives explore areas of the park that cannot be reached by day visitors and your game viewing is unlikely to be disturbed by vehicles from other lodges.

Each morning and afternoon you will set off in the company of your guide and tracker team in an open 4×4 safari vehicle, exploring the many diverse habitats of the park, from the acres of flamingos on the lake to the woodland’s tree-climbing lions and herds of elephant.

It’s also possible to head out on night game drives, explore the lake on mountain biking excursions and meet the local Maasai and encounter the nomadic Mang’ati tribe on cultural visits.

Escarpment Luxury Lodge

Overlooking Lake Manyara from its perch, Escarpment Luxury Lodge has a choice of sixteen chalets, all benefitting from stunning views.

All suites overlook the lake, and come in single, double and triple configurations. The private decks made for superb viewing platforms from which to take in the beautiful scenery, enjoy meals, or watch the sunset with a cold beer or G&T.

During your stay at Escarpment Luxury Lodge, you can spend your days on game drives or walking safaris in the surrounding reserves, which include Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park; take in the scenery from a birds-eye vantage point with a hot air balloon ride; or cycle to a local Maasai village.

At the lodge, why not make the most of your down-time in the pool or curled up on one of the sofas in the main lodge? The outdoor boma is the perfect dining spot, where you can also take in views of the lake or watch a Maasai dance performance.

Chem Chem Lodge is located in its own 4,000-acre conservation-focused concession between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks.

Eight luxury tented suites are widely spaced to ensure absolute privacy, sat on the edge of a palm island overlooking Lake Manyara waters. One is a family suite with two bedrooms.

In centre is the main lodge, shaped to reflects the form of a flamingo with its wings spread, which includes a dining room, lounge, library, viewing tower, swimming pool, spa, sundeck and its own spectacular view over Lake Manyara.

Expect a very personalised service, and a focus on ‘slow safari’ where you enjoy the wildlife, culture, landscapes of the reserve and national parks at a relaxed and unhurried pace, to really savour and make the most of it.
