Anyone looking for a true mountain lodge getaway which is all about good eating, great wines and tuning into the cosy farm life of the Drakensburg Mountains, then Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse would be the perfect fit.

Hidden away into Kwazulu’s slice of the resplendent Drakensburg Mountain Range and right on the borders of the UNESCO Ukahlamba Reserve, Richard and Mouse Poynton run this delightful country house hotel with a competent flair of homely hospitality and culinary passions.

Each of the eleven rooms are decorated differently and incorporating some quirky aspect or style from the region or the farmhouse’s history, so prepare yourself for lots of character, cosy log fires and country kitchen warmth. Richard does all the cooking and there is a large kitchen and herb garden attached to the house, so the produce used in the cooking is fresh and the menu changes with the seasons.

After a day outdoors exploring the area with the many different activities to choose from, Richard’s seven-course gourmet dinners paired with the cellar’s wines and striking views, are well received indeed.
