Perfect post-safari beach time

There are few better ways to finish off a Kenyan safari than with a few final days relaxing on its golden coastline on a luxury Kenyan coast tour.

North and south of bustling Mombasa, a number of charmingly rustic palm-lined beaches, the waters dotted with fishing boats and passing dhows. Diani beach has wonderful white sand and is known for its coral reefs and as a kitesurfing destination, while nearby Tiwi is lower key.

120km (75 miles) up the coast is Malindi, a small city and historical port with classic examples of Swahili and colonial Portuguese architecture as well as fine beaches. Neighbouring Watamu is a peaceful village sitting in a Marine National Park, a continuous protected coastal area that is hailed as one of the best snorkelling and diving areas in East Africa. It is home to around 600 species of fish and over 100 coral species, with sparklingly clear water. Of the larger species, commonly seen are whale sharks, manta rays, octopus, barracuda and occasionally dolphins. The dive season lasts from September through to April, November to January being optimal, and some dives taking place within the reef in August.

There are a handful of laid back properties and luxury resorts we suggest on the Kenyan Coast, ideal places to swim, catch some sun or fish, kitesurf, experience the culture and learn about the rich history here.

When to visit the Kenyan Coast

The best time to visit the Kenyan coast is during either of the country’s dry seasons. The long dry season runs from June to October, while the short dry season occurs between January and February. These time periods bring hot, sunny days and ideal weather and clear water conditions for snorkelling and diving. You can expect average day time temperatures between 27°C–30°C (81°F–86°F).

The short rainy season of November and December is a quieter time to visit and brings frequent short showers, but you can still enjoy exploring once the skies clear up.
