A unique combination of land and water

Resting in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is without doubt one of the most beautiful reserves in all of Africa. Land and delta meet in a rare combination of floodplains, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and forests.

Black and white rhino have recently been re-introduced, making it a ‘Big Five’ destination for luxury Moremi game reserve safaris. You can expect to see a starting number of species including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyaena, jackal, African wild dog, impala and red lechwe as well as nearly 500 types of bird. Game viewing is at its peak from July to October when seasonal pans dry up and wildlife flock to the reserve’s permanent water,

Within this expanse of diverse terrain, you’ll find the magical Chief’s Island and the Moremi Tongue of savannah. The divergent landscapes provide unique opportunities to explore in 4×4’s, on foot and by dug-out mokoro canoe or motor boat.

Highlights

Cruise across Xakanaxa Lagoon by boat scanning the reed beds for kingfishers and herons while hippopotamuses surface quietly in the channels

Head out on a late-afternoon game drive when the light softens and track lions, leopards, elephants and Botswana’s wild dogs

Travel by mokoro (a traditional dug-out canoe) for a lower-impact safari through the Delta’s waterways as your private guide points out birds, frogs and water plants around you

Explore Chief’s Island, especially in the Mombo Concession with your private guide, and look for both black and white rhino in one of Moremi’s most game-rich areas

End the day with an exclusive traditional boma braai (an open-air barbecue feast around the fire) at Camp Moremi dining under the stars

When to visit

May to October is great for game viewing as the weather is dry and wildlife concentrates around permanent channels and water sources. July to October is often considered the sweet spot within the dry season. During these months, the Okavango Delta’s waters are typically at their highest and sightings can be exceptional.

And November to March is ideal if you want to experience the green season. At this time some areas can be harder to access and a few camps close, as it’s the wettest point.
