Tokyo

Shangri-La Tokyo

After a smooth and speedy trip on the world-famous bullet train, you’ll find yourself at the elegant Shangri-La Tokyo, a haven of refinement set amid the relentlessly buzz of Tokyo, just opposite Tokyo Station. With some of the largest rooms in the capital, the Shangri-La is a calming, sleek retreat from the 24-hour energy of Tokyo. There’s one lobby bar and two restaurants, including the Japanese restaurant Nadaman, located on the level 29, where you can sample Chef Takehiro Yoshida’s sautéed eggplant wrapped in thin slices of Wagyu beef. The palette of dark wood, chocolate brown and burnt orange is complimented by low, amber lighting, exuding a sense of elegance and sophistication. Many of the spacious rooms have views across Tokyo, a scene that is best viewed at night. That’s ideal, because you’ll be spending your days out and about exploring the endless fascinations of Tokyo. Within walking distance of the hotel, you’ll find the Ginza shopping district and the Imperial Palace in its park surroundings, and a 20-minute train ride will deliver you to the Buddhist Asakusa Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest temple.

Kyoto

Hoshinoya

Sail along the banks of the Hozugawa River and tucked away in the hills of the Arashiyama district, you will find a series of traditional Japanese-inspired houses clinging to a mountainside, which make up the HOSHINOYA luxury hotel. Upon entering the hotel changed into slippers and silk robes and unwind in this retreat, which will make you feel miles away from the bustle of Kyoto. The 25 rooms at this exclusive resort infuses classic Japanese interiors with contemporary style, creating a tranquil, comfortable atmosphere. Sado Island

Ryokan Urashima

Ryokan Urashima is located close to Mano Bay to the west of the central part of Sado Island on a stretch of coastline popular with bathers. Originally, Urashima started out as a fish shop, and with the change of the times, it transformed itself into a caterer’s shop, and then into a Japanese-style restaurant. It was in 1980 that Urashima became an inn. Late at night there were no means of transportation available for the guests who would go home after enjoying the dinner. Providing guests with a place to stay, Ryokan Urashima came into being. Today the inn remains popular among islanders as well as visitors, maintaining its authentic feel. The inn itself has two elements – the East Building, designed by Hiroshi Naito, one of Japan’s leading architects, and the South Building by prominent architect Japanese Koh Kitayama, a modern design with the building enveloped in glass. Being the original attraction, the seafood here is a real highlight and the chef personally goes out to the fish market to get the best fresh catch daily. The in-season dishes such as abalones, stonefish and rosy sea bass here are renowned among locals and visitors alike.

Ise Shima National Park

Perched overlooking Ago Bay, this resort celebrates traditional Japanese mineral hot springs, called onsen, in peaceful tranquillity in Ise Shime National Park, renowned for its culture and cuisine.

Hakone

Gora Kadan Ryokan

Immerse yourself into the ancient Japanese way of life at Gora Kadan, the former retreat of the Imperial Family. Situated in the heart of Hakone National Park, this traditional Japanese ryokan – meaning inn – echoes the country’s longstanding cultural emphasis on beauty and purity of form, and was designed to exist in harmony with the nearby mountain range. With just 39 guest rooms and suites, this luxury ryokan provides a retreat from the often-hectic pace of city life through the use of Japanese Zen minimalism. You’ll find sliding walls made of rice paper, fragrant floral incense and modern luxury commodities. This calming retreat is located in an area known for its hot springs from which mineral rich water flows into the open-air baths. During your stay enjoy the traditional Kaiseki cuisine, consisting of a variety of small dishes, which will be served in your room for complete tranquility.

Kyoto

Aman Kyoto

Aman Kyoto represents the fruition of a beautiful landscape first conceived as the garden of a textile museum. Whimsical stone pathways curve gently along the forest floor, and stone slabs blanketed in moss serve as the foundations for the resort’s architecture. Its spacious and light-filled interiors, paying homage to the traditional Ryokan inn. The rooms are minimalist, drawing the eye out into their natural surroundings. The hotels interiors are spacious and flooded with light, creating a peaceful place that encourages relaxation. Dine on home-cooked Kyoto-style dishes as well as innovative Western fare at The Living Pavilion. This welcoming dining space boasts elegant interiors and a bar that centres on a fireplace. Huge glass doors open out onto stunning views of the gardens and nearby forest. Make the most of the contemplative atmosphere at the hotel’s natural hot springs and traditional onsen. The secluded grounds are part of what was an artistic community that gave rise to the revered Rinpa school of painting some 400 years ago, and are within easy reach of Kyoto’s most important sites, including the stunning golden temple, Kinkakuji.
