Located a few minutes’ walk from the UNESCO-listed Itsukushima Shrine and its famous vermilion Grand Torii Gate, Itsukushima Iroha is a luxury ryokan in Miyajima that incorporates Japanese and Scandinavian design. Situated on the waterfront facing the Seto Inland Sea, it was designed by architect Shinichiro Ogata, whose minimalist approach combines natural materials with traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Each of the ryokan’s guest rooms is individually styled, with tatami flooring, shoji screens and one-of-a-kind furnishings from celebrated designers like Kenya Hara, Piero Lissoni and Finn Juhl. The premium suites have private baths and sea views, some overlooking the shrine’s red ‘floating’ gate. Traditional Japanese architectural techniques are used in clever ways throughout, such as washi paper, Sekishu-gawara tiles and arched stucco made to evoke the sea.

One of the property’s most distinctive features is its rooftop open-air bath, which has views across the water towards Itsukushima Shrine and the surrounding mountains. Dining takes place at Restaurant Anago Meshi Ueno Iroha, which serves kaiseki-style Setouchi cuisine with seasonal ingredients. Specialities include Miyajima oysters and anago (conger eel), a regional dish long associated with the island. Itsukushima Shrine, Daishō-in Temple and the Miyajima Ropeway are all within easy reach, making this Miyajima luxury hotel an excellent base for exploring the island.

Tokyo

Shangri-La Tokyo
